VANCOUVER: ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਕੈਨੇਡੀਅਨ ਨਾਗਰਿਕ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਰਾਧਿਕ ਸੰਗਠਨ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ 240 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਯਾਨੀ 20 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਫੈਡਰਲ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿਕਅਤੀ ਨੇ ਲਗਪਗ ਇੱਕ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੇ ਅਰਸੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਜ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਤੋਂ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿੱਚ 17 ਮਿਲੀਅਨ ਡਾਲਰ ਤੱਕ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਦੀ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਕਿਲੋਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਮੈਥਾਮਫੇਟਾਮਾਈਨ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਕੀਨ ਦੀ ਤਸਕਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਜ ਅਟਾਰਨੀ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਇੱਕ ਰਿਲੀਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਬਰੈਂਪਟਨ, ਓਨਟਾਰੀਓ, ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ 63 ਸਾਲਾ ਗੁਰਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਿੱਧੂ ਨੂੰ ਯੂਨਾਈਟਿਡ ਸਟੇਟਸ ਡਿਸਟ੍ਰਿਕਟ ਜੱਜ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਫੈਡਰਲ ਬਿਊਰੋ ਆਫ ਇਨਵੈਸਟੀਗੇਸ਼ਨ ਨੇ ਨਸ਼ੀਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਸਕਰੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਧੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੈਕਸ਼ੁਅਲ ਅਸਾਲਟ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਏ 24 ਸਾਲਾ ਕਰਨਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ 170 ਦਿਨ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਜ਼ਰਬੰਦ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਕਰਨਦੀਪ 2023 ਵਿਚ ਆਰਜ਼ੀ ਵੀਜ਼ਾ ’ਤੇ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਪੁੱਜਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਵੀ ਟੈਂਪਰੇਰੀ ਰੈਜ਼ੀਡੈਂਟ ਵਜੋਂ ਮੁਲਕ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਹੁਣ ਅਪਰਾਧਕ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਘਿਰਨ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਪੀ.ਆਰ. ਮਿਲਣ ਦੇ ਆਸਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ। ਅਦਾਲਤੀ ਦਸਤਾਵੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਕਰਨਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਔਰਤ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਇਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ ਅਤੇ 13 ਜੂਨ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸ ਜਾਰਜ ਵਿਖੇ ਘਟਨਾ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਈ। ਔਰਤ ਨੇ ਆਰ.ਸੀ.ਐਮ.ਪੀ. ਕੋਲ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਕਰਨਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ।
ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਮਾਰਕ ਕਾਰਨੀ ਨੇ ਸਾਊਦੀ ਅਰਬ ਦੇ ਕਰਾਊਨ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਬਿਨ ਸਲਮਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ‘ਤੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ “ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦੇਣਾ” ਇੱਕ ਬੇਅਸਰ ਰਣਨੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਕੀ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਤਭੇਦਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਪਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਧ ਅਹਿਮੀਅਤ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਕਾਰਨੀ ਨੇ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਵਪਾਰਕ ਸਬੰਧ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੀਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ‘ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿਰਭਰਤਾ ਘਟਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਵੇਂ ਰਣਨੀਤਕ ਭਾਈਵਾਲ ਲੱਭਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ। ਪਿਛਲੇ 26 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੈਨੇਡੀਅਨ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਾਊਦੀ ਅਰਬ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਊਰਜਾ, ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਖਣਿਜਾਂ, ਰੱਖਿਆ, ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਢਾਂਚੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਟੀਫੀਸ਼ੀਅਲ ਇੰਟੈਲੀਜੈਂਸ ਸਮੇਤ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 13 ਸਮਝੌਤਿਆਂ ‘ਤੇ ਦਸਤਖਤ ਕੀਤੇ।
