PARIS (FRANCE), OCTOBER 29: The knife attack at a Church in Nice city has killed at least 3 people, injuring several, officials said on Thursday.
A knife-wielding attacker beheaded a woman while killing two other people in a suspected terrorist incident at Nice city’s church on Thursday, said police and officials.
Mayor of Nice City, Christian Estrosi, took to twitter to describe the attack as terrorism, and said it had happened in or near the city’s Notre Dame church.
“I can confirm everything suggests this was a terror attack in the Notre-Dame Basilica,” Mayor Christian Estrosi, a former MP with the right-wing Republicans party, said in a tweet.
The attacker had shouted the phrase “Allahu Akbar“, (God is greatest), even after he had been detained by police, Estrosi said.
According to reports, the police shot the suspected knife attacker and has been detained.
“The suspected knife attacker was shot by police while being detained, he is on his way to hospital, he is alive,” Estrosi told reporters.
President Emmanuel Macron was heading to the city, while Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin held a crisis meeting as he warned people to avoid the site of the attack, reports Al Jazeera.
In another tweet, Estrosi said, “I spoke with the president on the phone, he extended his gratitude to the Nice police and all the security forces, and asked me to extend his support to the residents of Nice, where he will arrive late this morning.”
