ਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਕੋਰੀਡੋਰ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਤਾਵ ‘ਤੇ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ 1999 ‘ਚ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਤਕਾਲੀ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਸਵਰਗੀ ਅਟਲ ਬਿਹਾਰੀ ਵਾਜਪਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਨਵਾਜ਼ ਸ਼ਰੀਫ ਵਿਚਾਲੇ ਚਰਚਾ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। ਪਰ, ਨੀਂਹ ਪੱਥਰ 26 ਨਵੰਬਰ 2018 ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਅਤੇ 28 ਨਵੰਬਰ 2018 ਨੂੰ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਕੋਰੀਡੋਰ 2019 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ 550ਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਪੁਰਬ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ 12 ਨਵੰਬਰ, 2019 ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂਆਂ ਲਈ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਡੇਰਾ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਅਥਾਹ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਸਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ 1504 ਵਿੱਚ ਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ 1539 ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਥੇ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤ ਸਮਾਏ। ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਵੀ ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਡੇਰਾ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
1947 ਵਿਚ ਵੰਡ ਵੇਲੇ ਇਹ ਖੇਤਰ ਭਾਰਤ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੰਡਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ। ਵੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਜੱਸੜ ਪੁਲ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਣਅਧਿਕਾਰਤ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ 1965 ਦੀ ਭਾਰਤ-ਪਾਕਿ ਜੰਗ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਫੌਜਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੁਲ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਸਾਲਾਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਆਸਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਹੁੰਚਯੋਗ ਹੈ।
