Indian-origin Doctor in New Zealand becomes MP for the first time

AUCKLAND, OCTOBER 17: Creating history, an Indian-origin doctor, Gaurav Mrinal Sharma has been elected Member of Parliament from ‘Hamilton West’ constituency.

Dr Sharma from Hamilton city, securing16,950 votes, defeated his rival with 4,425 votes. 12,525 were polled by his opponents Tim.

Gaurav Sharma, who hails from Hareta village in district Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, did his medical degree from Washington. He did his schooling from Adhunik Public School in Dharmshala.

His father Girdhar Sharma studied at Jalandhar and they are closely associated with Punjab. His mother’s name is Purnima Kumari.

Dr Sharma now resides in New Zealand with parents.
