ਓਲੰਪਿਕ ਚੈਂਪੀਅਨ ਨੀਰਜ ਚੋਪੜਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਮਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਚੌਥੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਨਾਗਰਿਕ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। 24 ਸਾਲਾ ਜੈਵਲਿਨ ਥ੍ਰੋਅਰ ਚੋਪੜਾ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਥ ਕੋਵਿੰਦ ਨੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਭਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਯੋਜਿਤ ਸਮਾਰੋਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਚੋਪੜਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਪੈਰਾਲੰਪਿਕ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੋਨ ਤਮਗਾ ਜੇਤੂ ਬੈਡਮਿੰਟਨ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਮੋਦ ਭਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਚੋਪੜਾ ਨੇ ਟੋਕੀਓ ਓਲੰਪਿਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਓਲੰਪਿਕ ਸੋਨ ਤਮਗਾ ਟਰੈਕ ਅਤੇ ਫੀਲਡ ਈਵੈਂਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ। ਉਹ ਅਭਿਨਵ ਬਿੰਦਰਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਦਾ ਸੋਨ ਤਮਗਾ ਜਿੱਤਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ।
ਇੱਕ ਟਵਿੱਟਰ ਪੋਸਟ ਵਿੱਚ, ਚੋਪੜਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਹ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਨਿਮਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਸ਼ਟ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੈਡਲ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। “ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੁਭਕਾਮਨਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਸ਼ੀਰਵਾਦ ਲਈ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਲਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਰਵੋਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਖਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂਗਾ,” ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ।

ਨੀਰਜ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ 25 ਦਸੰਬਰ 1997 ਨੂੰ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀਪਤ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਖੰਡਰਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ-ਪਿਤਾ ਸਰੋਜ ਦੇਵੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਤੀਸ਼ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਹਨ। ਨੀਰਜ ਜਲੰਧਰ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਲਵਲੀ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਆਰਟਸ ਦਾ ਬੈਚਲਰ ਹੈ, ਉਸਨੇ ਦਯਾਨੰਦ ਐਂਗਲੋ-ਵੈਦਿਕ ਕਾਲਜ, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਸ਼ਨ ਪੂਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ, ਚੋਪੜਾ ਨੂੰ 2016 ਵਿੱਚ ਫੌਜ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਈਫਲ ਰੈਜੀਮੈਂਟ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੂਲ ਇਕਾਈ – 4 ਰਾਜਪੂਤਾਨਾ ਰਾਈਫਲਜ਼ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਇੱਕ ਜੂਨੀਅਰ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਡ ਅਫਸਰ (JCO) ਅਤੇ ਨਾਇਬ ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਫੌਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਨਾਇਬ ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਰੈਂਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ JCO 20 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਚੋਪੜਾ ਨੂੰ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਿਭਾਅ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
