ਸੰਗਰੂਰ – ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਖਨਾਲ ਖੁਰਦ ਦੀ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਓਲੰਪੀਅਨ ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ (74) ਦਾ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਕੁਰੂਕਸ਼ੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਖਰੀ ਸਾਹ ਲਿਆ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਐਵਾਰਡੀ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਗੋਲਡ ਮੈਡਲਿਸਟ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਦੇਹਾਂਤ ‘ਤੇ ਟਵੀਟ ਕਰਕੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸ਼ੂਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਪੀੜਤ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਪਿਛਲੇ 2 ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ‘ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕੁਰੂਕਸ਼ੇਤਰ ਦੇ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਲਾਜ ਲਈ ਦਾਖਲ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਬੀਤੇ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਅੰਤਿਮ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਅੱਜ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਖਨਾਲ ਖੁਰਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਾਲ 1970 ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਫੌਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਰਤੀ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਜਜ਼ਬਾ ਜਾਗਿਆ। ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਨਲ ਬਲਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੌਹਲ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਣੇ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਕੈਂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਲਈ। ਸਖ਼ਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਅਤੇ ਲਗਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਖੇਡਾਂ, ਸਿਕੰਦਰਾਬਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸੋਨ ਤਮਗਾ ਜਿੱਤਿਆ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕੱਪ ਲਈ ਚੁਣਿਆ ਗਿਆ।
ਸੂਬੇਦਾਰ ਕੋਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਮੰਡਲ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਿੰਗ ਕੱਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਨ ਤਗਮੇ ਜਿੱਤੇ। ਉਹ ਮੁੰਬਈ ਵਿੱਚ 9ਵੀਂ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਚੈਂਪੀਅਨਸ਼ਿਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਨ ਤਮਗਾ ਜਿੱਤਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਇਕਲੌਤਾ ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ ਬਣਿਆ। ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਦੇ ਨੰਬਰ-1 ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਅਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਲੜਿਆ। ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਲ 1982 ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਜੁਨ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਸਾਲ 1983 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। 1984 ਵਿੱਚ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਾਸ ਏਂਜਲਸ, ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਓਲੰਪਿਕ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲਿਆ, ਪਰ ਉੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਘਟਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੰਨਿਆਸ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ।
ਦੱਸ ਦੇਈਏ ਕਿ ਮਾਨਯੋਗ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ 9ਵੀਂ ਅਤੇ 10ਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਦੇ ਸਿਲੇਬਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੱਕੇਬਾਜ਼ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਨੌਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਲਈ ਕੌਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਮੇਤ ਉੱਡਨ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਮਿਲਖਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਖਿਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੀਵਨੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ।
