ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਤੁੰਗਭਦਰਾ ਨਦੀ ਦੇ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਰੂਪਾਕਸ਼ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਹੰਪੀ, ਕਰਨਾਟਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਮੰਦਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਬੇਲਾਰੀ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੈਂਗਲੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ 353 ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੀ ਦੂਰੀ ‘ਤੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਵੀ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹੰਪੀ ਰਾਮਾਇਣ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਕਿਸ਼ਕਿੰਧਾ ਹੈ। ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੂਪਾਕਸ਼ ਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਦ੍ਰਾਵਿੜ ਆਰਕੀਟੈਕਚਰਲ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਰਾਵਣ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਭਗਤ ਸੀ।
ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਸ਼ਿਵਲਿੰਗ ਦੱਖਣ ਵੱਲ ਝੁਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਲਿੰਗਮ ਦੱਖਣ ਵੱਲ ਝੁਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨੇ ਰਾਵਣ ਨੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸ਼ਿਵਲਿੰਗ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਰਤ ਵੀ ਰੱਖੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਿਵਲਿੰਗ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਰੱਖਣਗੇ, ਉੱਥੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਰਾਵਣ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਇਸ ਸ਼ਿਵਲਿੰਗ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਲੰਕਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਿਵਲਿੰਗ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਂਪ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਸ਼ਿਵਲਿੰਗ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ‘ਤੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਰਾਵਣ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਲਾ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਸਕਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਥੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਮੰਦਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਵਿਰੂਪਕਸ਼ਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਦੇਵੀ ਪੰਪਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਹੈ। ਇੱਥੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਮੰਨੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਰੂਪਾਕਸ਼ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ 7ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
