ਕਥਾ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਮਹਾਤਪੱਸਵੀ ਨਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਰਾਇਣ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ, ਭਗਵਾਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਦੇ ਅਵਤਾਰ, ਹਿਮਾਲਿਆ ਦੇ ਕੇਦਾਰ ਸ਼੍ਰਿੰਗਾ ‘ਤੇ ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ, ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋਤਿਰਲਿੰਗ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਵਰਦਾਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਸ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਾਂਡਵ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵੀ ਹੈ। ਦੰਤਕਥਾ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਮਹਾਭਾਰਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨੇ ਸਵਰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਇੱਕ ਮੱਝ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਂਡਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਲਪੇਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ। ਭੀਮ ਨੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੱਝ ਦੀ ਪੂਛ ਫੜ ਲਈ। ਜਿਸ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ‘ਤੇ ਭੀਮ ਨੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਕੇਦਾਰਨਾਥ ਧਾਮ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਕੇਦਾਰਨਾਥ ਮੰਦਰ ਪਾਂਡਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਣਵਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਗੁਆਚ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅੱਠਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਦਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ਼ੰਕਰਾਚਾਰੀਆ ਨੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਮੁੜ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ। ਕੇਦਾਰਨਾਥ ਮੰਦਿਰ 400 ਸਾਲ ਤੱਕ ਬਰਫ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਬਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ੰਕਰਾਚਾਰੀਆ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਧ ਹੈ। ਆਦਿ ਸ਼ੰਕਰਾਚਾਰੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਮੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਨਵੀਨੀਕਰਨ ਜਾਰੀ ਰਿਹਾ। ਮਾਲਵੇ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਭੋਜ ਨੇ 10ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ 13ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਮੁਰੰਮਤ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ 13ਵੀਂ ਤੋਂ 17ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਤੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਬਰਫ਼ ਯੁੱਗ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਬਰਫ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਬਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ।
ਕੇਦਾਰਨਾਥ ਮੰਦਰ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਲਈ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹਰਿਦੁਆਰ ਤੱਕ ਰੇਲ ਗੱਡੀ ਲੈ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ। ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਟੈਕਸੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ। ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਹਰਿਦੁਆਰ ਤੋਂ ਸੋਨਪ੍ਰਯਾਗ ਤੱਕ 235 ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਨਪ੍ਰਯਾਗ ਤੋਂ ਗੌਰੀਕੁੰਡ ਤੱਕ 5 ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਸੜਕ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ 16 ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੀ ਸੜਕ ਪੈਦਲ ਹੀ ਢੱਕਣੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ। ਇੱਥੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪਾਲਕੀ ਜਾਂ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵੀ ਅੱਗੇ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਤੈਅ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।
