WASHINGTON, AUGUST 1: President Donald Trump has said that he will ban the social media app, TikTok, in the United States. Talking to mediapersons in the Air Force One, Trump said, “As far as TikTok is concerned, we are banning them from the US.” It is expected that Trump may sign a document in this regard on Saturday. A few weeks ago, Secretary of States Mike Pompeo had hinted at banning some Chinese social media sites, including TikTok.
US officials have expressed concerns over using the social media app. According to them, personal information of Americans can be gathered with the help of the app. However, the app has denied the allegations. The app, which has millions of users around the world, is quite popular in the US. Last month, India had also banned the social media app over privacy concerns.
The US President has been vocal against China over the outbreak of coronavirus. The US and China have been taking actions against each other in the past few months. Earlier, the US had imposed visa restrictions on employees of Chinese technology companies. On the other hand, China had also retaliated and imposed sanctions against American officials.
Moreover, the US recently ordered to close a Chinese consulate in Houston and leveled spying allegations against China. Thereafter, China also issued closure orders of a US mission in Chengdu.
Diplomacy experts believe that the relations of the US and China are likely to remain tense till the American presidential elections, which will be held in the first week of November this year.
