ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਆਮਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਸਾਲ 60 ਫ਼ੀਸਦੀ ਦੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਰਾਵਟ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਗਿਰਾਵਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੈ, ਜੋ 2023 ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁੱਲ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦਾ 51.6 ਫ਼ੀਸਦੀ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਸਨ। ਹੁਣ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ 8.1 ਫ਼ੀਸਦੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਮਾਰਕ ਕਾਰਨੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਇਮੀਗ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਟਿਕਾਊ ਅਤੇ ਭਰੋਸੇਮੰਦ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਕਦਮ ਚੁੱਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਮੰਗਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਇੱਕ-ਤਿਹਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਅਸਥਾਈ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਕਾਮਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਗਭਗ ਅੱਧੀ ਕਮੀ ਆਈ ਹੈ।

ਕੈਲਗਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੱਖਣੀ ਏਸ਼ੀਆਈ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਫਿਰੌਤੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਦੇ ਮਾਮਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ 16 ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਹੀ ਹੁਣ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜ਼ਮਾਨਤ ‘ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਹਨ। ਸੁਪਰਡੈਂਟ ਜੈੱਫ ਬੈੱਲ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੁਲਜ਼ਮ ਕੈਨੇਡੀਅਨ ਨਾਗਰਿਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਜਾਂ ਵਰਕ ਵੀਜ਼ੇ ‘ਤੇ ਇੱਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਕੁੱਲ 56 ਦੋਸ਼ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ। ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਹੁਣ 15 ਸ਼ੱਕੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਸਵੀਰਾਂ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕੇ ਜੋ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
